Before the planetary pentacles, before the spheres, before the distinction between classical and forbidden operations, Solomonic magic recognizes two supreme forms. These are not planetary instruments, nor are they bound to a specific operation. They function instead as architectural keys—structures that define authority, order, and access itself.
These two pentacles are traditionally understood as standing above the planetary system, serving as foundational matrices from which all other Solomonic workings derive legitimacy and coherence:
- The Shield of Solomon
- The Great Universal Pantacle (also called the Mystical Figure or Key of Solomon)
They are not interchangeable. Each governs a different aspect of sovereignty: one protective and executive, the other structural and cosmological.
Together, they form the apex of Solomonic magical doctrine.

The Shield of Solomon—often called the Seal of Solomon—is among the most widely recognized symbols in Western esotericism. Medieval traditions describe Solomon as possessing a ring engraved with this seal, granting him command over demons, angels, animals, and the unseen world. While the biblical text mentions physical golden shields made by Solomon, the magical Shield belongs to later mystical transmission rather than scripture.
Its authority is functional, not historical.
Symbolism and Geometry
The Shield of Solomon appears in two principal forms:
- Pentagram (five-pointed star)
- Hexagram (six-pointed star), often enclosed within concentric circles and divine names

Where the Shield governs authority, the Universal Pantacle governs structure.
This figure is understood as a rudimentary and archetypal representation of the Tree of Life, predating its later diagrammatic standardization. It does not merely reference the Tree—it encodes it.
In this sense, the Universal Pantacle is not a tool of command, but a map of reality.
The Rudimentary Tree of Life
The central cross-like structure of the Pantacle displays Hebrew names corresponding to the Sephiroth:

Surrounding the structure are 22 Hebrew letters, corresponding to the paths between the Sephiroth, enclosing the Tree within a circular totality.

Traditionally, the Great Universal Pantacle is associated with:

Unlike the Shield of Solomon, this pentacle does not command spirits.
It reveals structure.

The Great Universal Pantacle is not a working pentacle in the operational sense. It is best understood as:
- a key rather than a tool
- a map rather than a weapon
- a foundation rather than a method
Within the Solomonic corpus, it functions as the theoretical backbone upon which all other pentacles—planetary, forbidden, or otherwise—implicitly rely.
III. Relationship Between the Two Supreme Pentacles
These two pentacles are often confused or conflated. This is a mistake.
